My Baby 3 and Friends Review

My daughter has never really been one to consistently play with dolls. Neither has she been big on video games. These are things that she's normally content with only for a little while and before you know it, she's on to something else. That's why I was surprised at the interest she showed in the My Baby 3 and Friends game.

My Baby 3 and Friends is the third installment of this best selling game. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed creating her baby; from the gender to the skin and eye colors and even to selecting a name for her. She takes care of her created baby by feeding, bathing and changing her as well as teaching her skills such as shape matching and how to swim. She has even earned money to buy additional clothes and accessories. In this game, the baby also interacts with other babies and a puppy. These are all great tools for sparking your daughter's social development skills.

Potty Training Woes.. Do I Need to Go Back to Pull-Ups?

Training my oldest two children to go to the potty was pretty simple. Once they learned, there was no going back. I mean, I was afraid of the whole how they were going to get through the night thing, but they did it. I kind of assumed my younger two would follow suit. Not so.

My 3rd child, who is now 4, is having overnight issues. Many nights i'm up late, and so I wake him up before I head to bed, and this works most of the time, but there are still those times where that just isn't good enough. I mean aside from speech delays and bed-wetting, he's really intelligent for his age.

Anyone else? Have you had this problem? Can you give me any advice on how to handle this?

If you've been with me for a while, you may recall some reviews that i've done on Suave bodywashes. These included their Wild Cherry Blossom as well as their Mango Mandarin fragrances. I really appreciate Suave products because they're quality products available at really affordable prices.

Well Suave has recently released some new body lotions in their Naturals lineup. The new fragrances include Mango Mandarin and Wild Cherry Blossom to go along with the body washes. They've also re-formulated their Lavender Vanilla body lotion.

My Blog Spark Dinner

Thanks to My Blog Spark and Wanchai Ferry I had the opportunity to meet up, along with other bloggers, at a fabulous restaurant in Chicago called Ben Pao. The food was absolutely wonderful. Here is the menu:

Everyone was served the same thing, except that when it came to the entrees, we were asked to select one per guest, so my husband chose the Szechuan Chicken and I chose the Shrimp Lo Mein. The food was as eye pleasing as it was tasty. Afterwards, everyone received fortune cookies, as are standard when you go out for Chinese. My husband's and my fortune cookies contained the same message..... as did everyone else's that had met and experienced such a decadent meal:

Kung Zhu

Of course you've probably seen the Kung Zhu commercial by now. I've included the video clip just to refresh you. As a member of BSM Media, I had the opportunity to have a box sent to me to hand out to some boys. My sister in law so graciously allowed me to have an "after-party" after my niece's birthday party. I didn't want to set things up too soon, because I didn't know how their reaction would be. Good thing. The party was nearly over, but not quite, when I got everything set up and the boys were ready to claim a Kung Zhu to make their own.

There are the good guys, and the bad guys; the Special Forces and the Ninja Warriors. They go through training and are put to the test in a duel in the Battle Arena. One of the features that I find really cool is how a micro chip in their battle armor totally changes their personalities! These boys had a blast. You could tell that they were REALLY excited about being proud new owners of their very own Kung Zhus.

We Enjoy Smores....

Anytime! It doesn't have to be a special occasion. And you may find this funny, but we have a gas stove at this place just as we did at our last place. Back when I started blogging I really did intend for things to be more focused on my life as I know it. My life as being a christian who is also human and facing challenges like everyday people. A Family Mini Vacation at the Radisson

We decided to take a weekend away with the kids just to get out. Something we don't get to do very often, but i'm now looking forward to more of it. Definitely. Our trip away found us at the Schaumburg, IL Radisson. I was pleasantly delighted to find that they had sleep number beds. Huge ones. If you've never heard of these beds, they're adjustable. What makes them even better is that my side could be soft, while my husband's could be firmer. Here are some pictures that I captured while we were there:

A comfortable place with peaceful surroundings. There's even a restaurant called Ming's located right on site. There's an outdoor heated pool, which my kids (except my 2 year old) loved. They don't yet know how to swim. so their comfort level with water scares me. A lot of great places to visit are nearby which include one of the nation's largest malls, The Woodfield mall. We need to get back so I can ~~get another night on that bed~~ finish seeing the rest of the mall. If we ever go back to the Schaumburg, IL area, i'd definitely consider another stay at the Radisson hotel.

Glue Dots Summer Bonding Project #GlueDots

Before being accepted as a part of the Glue Dots Summer Bonding Project, I don't know if i'd heard of them. Glue dots are a non messy way to stick things. They can easily be removed. They are kid friendly and therefore mom friendly....i.e. no more glue all over the place; hands, clothes, hair (you get the picture). I was able to comfortably hand sheets of glue dots to my older children and didn't have to worry so much about the younger ones working with them.

I went to the craft store and picked up some foam sheets and set of hole punchers that punch out various shapes. We got the glue dots out and got to sticking. This is what we started out with (click on the pictures for a better view) :

The only thing we used to stick everything were the glue dots! Glue dots proved to be a great way to bond with my kids while allowing them to be creative and also allowed us to just spend quality time together.

Thanks to Wanchai Ferry and My Blog Spark, my husband and I had the opportunity to try the not yet released Beef and Broccoli meal. If you haven't heard of the Wanchai Ferry line, it's the quick and simple way to prepare Chinese for two at home.

Love Chinese food but don't feel like going out? Let me introduce you to Wanchai Ferry. Found in your grocery store's freezer section, Wanchai Ferry comes complete with everything you need to make a variety of restaurant quality Chinese food in 15 minutes or less.

This was my first experience with the Wanchai Ferry line and I really appreciate that it's quick and simple to prepare. In the bag, there's your beef and vegetables and two other pouches; one that contains rice, and the other that contains the sauce. The instructions on the bag are simple, and if followed in order, everything will be ready together. It took about a total of 12 minutes to have everything ready to plate.

Though it's a frozen meal, everything had a fresh taste. I really appreciated the texture of everything as well. The beef was tender, the watercress and broccoli crunchy, and the rice, well let me just say I wish my rice would come out just as it did everytime, because it was absolutely perfect. They even have meal tips at their website to enhance your Wanchai Ferry Meal which include things that you can add into your meal, and side dish suggestions.

My husband and I were a little split on the taste. He says it was good just the way it was. I thought the sauce was a little over bearing and took away from the taste of the other components of the dish.

My final thoughts? I would eat this again, but probably not use the entire packet of sauce. I would love to be able to try out some of the other Wanchai Ferry varieties which include Orange Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein, Spicy Garlic Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken...all with NO added MSG. Also keep watching for Kung Pao Chicken and Szechuan Style Chicken, which should be arriving soon.

He said that the foot i'd given special attention to felt smoother.

#Freschetta Pizza...A Review and Giveaway #Win

Mention the word pizza at my house and everyone's happy. That includes mom. I mean, aside from my not having to slave over a hot stove, it's a crowd pleaser. When we went out shopping for this pizza to be able to do this review I was amazed at the varieties. We were at one freezer and had made our selections, but we went down a couple more freezers and there were even more. We ended up exchanging some of the ones we had already picked out for some others. There are selections for meat lovers as well as vegetarians. From naturally rising to flatbread crusts.

The first pizza, I didn't get more than a bite. My husband took it out of the oven, just slightly overcooked, and cut it and before I knew it, my children had claimed about 2 slices each. I did asked them how they liked it, and they said it was great. On to pizza number two. My husband popped it into the oven and set the timer, but somehow it ended up somewhat over-cooked too. I don't know if it was just our oven, or if we needed to do the minimum time recommendation, so based on it being too done, I can't give a decent thought on it, but what I can give an honest review on is the one above. It's the Portabella Mushroom with Spinach Pizza that Freschetta makes. I put this one in the oven myself. I had to tweet about it, because when I removed it from the packaging, it already looked delicious before it was even baked. I set the timer, and I guess my son opened the oven , before the timer went off, and let me know it was done. I would recommend that if you're setting a timer, to use the minimum baking time.

As you can see from the picture above, we caught this one just at the right time. The crust was the perfect combination of crispiness with a bit of tenderness. I wouldn't have thought of putting mushrooms and spinach together, but i'm so glad the folks at Freschetta did. It's an awesome combination. I wanted to save my husband a piece, because he was set to come home from work a short while later. I thought I wanted him to be able to try it too, but I wanted it for myself and gave him a call and talked him out of it, so that he wouldn't come home disappointed that I didn't save him any. Before he could say it was ok good, i'd picked it up, even before I got off of the phone with him, and started eating. I didn't want him to have time to change his mind. Maybe next time. Maybe.

The Case of the Missing Keys

The last time I remembered seeing my keys was when my sister asked to borrow them because she thought she'd locked hers in her car (I have a copy of hers). I remembered her returning them, but don't recall seeing them anymore since then (until today, but i'll get there. This was approximately 2 months ago now.

I'd given up. I had caught my 2 year old dropping things outside of the screen. Maybe he'd somehow got them to fit through that hole too? Well, I checked. And while I did find a marker, a Magic Jack and some other small items, the keys were not there. I just wrote them off as having been thrown away by him, and decided i'd depend on my husband's set until he decided to make another copy of all of his keys for me.

Today comes, as we're readying ourselves for church. Deuce and Diamond get into an argument about who the cardboard dice belongs to. The one that came in the kid's meal that they don't play with anyway. An argument that started several days ago, and for some reason couldn't wait at least until after church. I don't know exactly what Deuce was looking for when he went to look underneath the wooden displays in our kitchen, but he found my keys. HE Found My Keys. I'd looked up and down, high and low, here and there, thought about offering a reward, and completely given up on them. My keys once lost, now found.

Happy Mother's Day

To all the mothers and mothers to be, I would like to wish you a Happy Mother's Day!

Today:

We got up this morning and went to morning service. We were late to Sunday School, but nonetheless caught the end of it. I hate being late especially for my childrens' sake, because they learn so much, even when I think i've covered just about every Old Testament story with them, i'm constantly finding out i've missed something. Our Pastor's wife was the speaker and she talked about the book of Ruth, and showed us how it compared to her life.

After she finished, little bags were handed out to the moms with handkerchiefs in them that say Yes, Lord! true woman, along with chocolate mints and a hershey's kiss. I'm supposing it was the men's department that bought the carnations for the mother's.

After arriving back home, we took the children to my dad's and my husband and I went out and picked up a few things from the grocery store and had a speed date consisting of coffee and brownies at the coffee shop.

So here we are now, back at home with our children, back to life as we know it. It really is great being a mom. It has it's trying times, but thank God we can always bounce back. I heard it only gets better. Here's to looking forward to the years to come.

Extreme Makeover...Blog Edition

How do you like it I guess would be a good question. I'm just really picky when it comes to these things, and the old one was just becoming an eye sore. I just couldn't stand it anymore. I do have a few more things that I have to tweak, but well, at least the main part is done.

If you have blogger and haven't yet heard of it, I want to let you in on how you can change your blog up if you'd like. Just go to draft.blogger.com/ and then click on layout on the blog that you want to change. Up on the left hand side underneath the tabs, you'll see "Template Designer." If you play around with it, you'll find that you can change the number of columns, which I just thought was totally awesome (I had to search hacks and paste in codes to get a third row before). You also have several background choices. There's just so much you can do. No technical skills required. It's SUPER easy and you can even get a preview before you apply it so you can see if it's what you really want. I would like to advise you, though, to copy your current CSS code which you'll find under Edit HTML before you get started just in case you want to revert back to your current template. Lastly i'd like to point out the fact that there's no need to worry about your widgets or followers or anything, they will stay there unless you take them out.

My Perfect Mother's Day

Well since i'm using this post to describe my favorite Mother's Day I guess I have to include children, right? Well, my perfect Mother's Day would be one in which I could rest; just sort of have the day off. No cooking, no cleaning, yet everyone's content. Maybe take out. I'd go with Italian or Chinese. A nice family movie in the dark with popcorn and perhaps a nice cold soft drink. If it would be just perfect, well the temperature would be just right and the bed would be right in our living room, for this one night only because our bedrooms are all upstairs and it would be nice to not have to walk up all of the stairs after enjoying a movie with the family. Well I guess then that we would also need a bathroom located on our first floor as well, because that too is upstairs (sigh). Oh well, I guess no perfect Mother's Day for me. But as long as I have my family and know that they're all well, that's about as perfect as it gets.

My daughter was SO excited when I let her know that we were selected to host a HotLocks Dolls party. We invited some cousins and friends (and moms) and had a blast. For those of you who've not yet heard of HotLocks dolls, they're adorable dolls with really long hair. 14 inches long to be exact. New From Digiorno: Pizza & Breadsticks (review)

Who doesn't love pizza? My family sure does. It's something we normally do around once a month at least, if not more. But it can get quite costly, and don't even mention adding breadsticks and drinks.

We were accepted to host a Housparty for the new Digiorno's Pizza and Breadsticks. Yup, it comes as a combo pack! I'd tried Digiorno's in the past, but now I have a reason and opportunity to share my thoughts on it. We enjoyed it much. We enjoyed the convenience of being able to go right to the freezer and pop it into the oven. It's done in around 21 minutes, which still beats the time that many delivery guys would make, and at around $7.00 rounded up, at least where I live, the price obviously wins, hands down compared to delivery. No tips to pay either.

Unlike many competitors, it does have a "fresh baked" taste. One of my guests said she was definitely going to be buying it again. It was a winner with the children we had over as well. The varieties that we tried were the Supreme, Pepperoni, and cheese. The breadsticks come in garlic and herb or cheese and did I mention that they even added the marinara sauce?? I'm a cheesy type of gal, so these were my favorite.

Thanks to Digiorno, we have a more affordable and delicious option when it comes to pizza night!

My Passion...

In response to the the hypothetical situation: Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever)I want to let you know my passion (you know, so you know how I feel if something like this would happen) (you know) (hypothetically).

My passion, as i'm sure matches the passion of hopefully everyone out there, is my family. I have four children, whom I love dearly, and want nothing but the best for them. That's why I chose to be a stay at home mom.

Well, I made this decision long before I had children. As a teenager, a freshman in high school, I lost a nephew to a careless babysitter. Along life's road I also lost a cousin, whose father was adopted. His father had just recently found us as long lost family and introduced us to his family. The young life of his own son was another lost to the carelessness of a babysitter. I know that all babysitters aren't this way, but after lightning struck twice, well let me just say that i'm sure the trauma would have the same effect on you as it had for me.

So, if the internet was wiped away (perhaps forever) by electrical storms, I want the blogosphere to know that as long as my children are safe and i'm able to be there for them, and have a husband that stands behind me and makes this possible for us and we have our Great and mighty God ultimately making this all possible, i'll be just fine!

So I got this recipe from my aunt when we passed through Shreveport after taking our long awaited trip to Louisiana to visit my mother in law. We arrived apparently not long after she'd baked them, and I turned down her offer to give me one, because she'd baked them for her church and had already given one to each of my children, so she was already 4 short. I asked her if she made them from a recipe, to which she replied yes and gave me a copy right away.

I finally made these cookies after handing out copies of the recipe myself, and it is a nice twist on ordinary chocolate chip cookies. I used my fairly new Nikon Coolpix L100, which was also purchased during our visit, to photograph these freshly baked goodies. I baked them in my new Wilton cookie sheet, one of several Wilton pans which are now regulars also.

If you'd like to try these out for yourself, here's the recipe which i've halved, and you can double if you want to make somewhere around 112 cookies.

1 cup (2 sticks) butter softened to room temperature
12 oz chocolate chips
2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup white sugar
4 oz hershey bar grated (a little more than half of the giant one)
2 and 1/2 cups oatmeal grounded to a fine powder (I used our food processor)
2 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
1 and 1/2 cups chopped nuts of your choice

Preheat your oven to 375. If you haven't already, go ahead and grind that oatmeal to a fine powder first. Set aside. Cream butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl mix your flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Slowly get this mixed into your creamed butter and sugar mixture until it's mixed well. Add the chocolate chips, grated hershey bar and nuts. Roll your cookie dough into balls and place them about 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet (as you can probably tell from the pictures, I made them about 2 bite sized). Bake for 10 minutes, remove and cool them. Enjoy!

It's not always easy trying to figure out a reward system for good behavior. I'm a mom of four young ones and i've been trying to figure one out myself. I've not yet been able to come up with one that i've liked everything about and stuck with it. How much money do you give them at this age? What chores are age appropriate? How often should they be rewarded? Well I received an invitation from BSM Media regarding a reward program that really does ease my mind when it comes to just this whole reward for chores thing. And one of the best things about it is that it's free. The site is called My Job Chart.

What's so great about My Job Chart? Well where do I begin? I really love the way the whole thing works. When you set up your account, you can put pictures of each of your family members, including mom and dad, and each gets his or her own password. That way as they finish a chore, they can sign in under themselves and check a box for the chore that they've completed. Chores include things like making their beds, cleaning their rooms and brushing their teeth. They can be set for everyday or certain days and you can even choose whether they should be done in the morning, evening or both. You can use the chores that are there already, and even add your own! It's set up so that they earn points, which can be used in a fully customizable store. They redeem their points for rewards that you choose, such as computer time, going out to eat, family game night, and the list goes on. Again, you can add your own rewards. You can even change the pictures for the chores and rewards if you so choose.

I like the fact that I can receive texts or emails notifying me as they finish chores and also when they've selected a reward. I can add bonus tasks so that they can earn bonus points and also there's a place for me to send them a note of encouragement, letting them know how proud I am of them for completing their chores.

I could already see my children's enthusiasm. My Job Chart teaches responsibility in a way that makes kids want to do their chores. I can see this working years down the road, as they get older because of how customizable it is. It's given me more peace of mind because it helped me explore other ways to reward our children, besides giving them money as an only reward. I know that I can always go and change things up to suit my needs if they aren't working out the way I want them to. I highly recommend it to anyone with children.

Calling All Chocolate Lovers Baskin Robbins Raspberry Truffle a-la mode Review

If you're a chocolate lover have I got news for you! As a part of the Twittermoms community, I found a message up on the board inviting bloggers to sample Baskin Robbins new Raspberry Truffle a-la mode (pictured above). Well actually I could have tried their Brownie a-la mode, if i'd so chosen, but decided that I already know that brownies are delicious, and so I wanted to try something different. I also had family over for the experience. When my brother tasted it, he noticed right away that it's rich. He'd only tasted about the top two layers. After about the second bite he was saying how really good it is. You have to get a little bit of every layer in your mouth to get the full gist of it. The flavors are perfectly paired to compliment each other. The same thing happened with my sister, who at first thought that she wasn't wowed by it, but when she got to taste everything together, I think it's safe to say that she'd changed her mind. I personally liked it too. It's chocolately, chewy, crunchy, sweet, cool goodness with a layer of raspberry. I'd do it all over again.

Oscar Party Recipes Plus a Delicious Recipe for Chocolate Chip Walnut Blondies

Filling:
2 eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 sticks unsalted butter melted
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 prepared deep-dish piecrust

Preheat oven to 325.

Mix eggs, flour, both sugars, butter and vanilla. Add in chocolate chips and walnuts. Pour into piecrust. You may want to put the piecrust on a baking sheet if it's really full because it will drip. Bake for 1 hour or until it's set (usually takes longer than an hour for me, maybe more like an hour and twenty minutes). This is one of those things that tastes even better when it's completely cooled or even the next day. Serve with ice cream and hot fudge, or chocolate shell

So What Do I Do?

My daughter, 6 years old, is tired of being the only girl. And this is not new, but as of lately she's complaining that she's lonely and wants a sister. I don't think i'm up to the challenge of putting my body through that again, and don't think we can afford adoption. It's gotten to the point that she wants me to sleep in her room with her.

I can see where she's coming from. She's surrounded by boys. Three of them. They can be rough at times, and while she will hold hers down, she still enjoys all things girly. Wearing bracelets, carrying a purse, pink things, tea parties with her little tea set and such, and well you got the picture. She has girl cousins that she spends time with here and there, but I guess it's nothing compared to having your own little sister to be with you all of the time, wanting to ~~take~~ share everything. Doesn't she see what her brothers already go through with each other?

I can't blame her still. I had three younger sisters, and even through all of everything we put each other through, there's nothing like having a sister of your own. Someone to tell things to that you can't tell your brothers or anyone else for that matter. So my question is what do I do? How do I handle this situation? It's to the point where she's even asked if she could be my daughter/sister!

Strep Throat and Scarlet Fever

My baby, who was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. Still a little puny, though trying to still be himself.

Somewhere around two weeks ago, my daughter got sick. Fever, chills, nausea and sore throat. When my boys managed to not get sick within the following couple of days, I thought they had finally escaped because when one gets sick, within a few hours or maybe a day at the most someone else would be sick too, until we were all covered. Except my husband of course who like never catches anything from anyone around here, through kisses and all. I credit his mom for feeding him onions and garlic and bell pepper in everything she cooks. He says, nope it's all the milk he drank coming up.

Well anyway, several days later my two oldest boys catch whatever this thing is. They started to get better and neither me nor my youngest son caught it. Yes! At least we'd escaped, or so I thought, again. When it seemed as though the dust settled and we were in bed around 3 nights ago now, I noticed my baby had gotten REALLY hot! I've been describing it as him feeling like an iron. And he probably could have cleared out some wrinkles, at least in a delicate garment. His little hands and feet felt like ice. I pulled out the meds and started administering. My hubby wanted to take him to the hospital, but I remember another time when my oldest was around 3 months old and his temp was high and they gave him meds and sent us on our way, so I decided not to. I soon thereafter noticed I was getting chills and my throat had slightly started to hurt. I geared up for the battle ahead.

The next day, my husband says that the baby has a rash. Okay, i'm not going to panic. We didn't bother about it so much. It wasn't SO bad. By the next day the rash had spread something fierce. After researching a little, my hubby says "I think he has scarlett fever." I thought this was not possible. We don't go out much, let alone being around someone who has scarlet fever, the ancient not heard of much disease. I mean, wouldn't he be so much worse off?

I was going to let him take him to the hospital alone, but my throat had gotten so bad, it hurt to even talk. I described it as feeling as if someone had cut [the inside] of my throat. It didn't take much insisting on his part to get me to go, and so we're off. Dr. comes in and looks at the baby and says, well (key words) the rash looks kind of like sand paper, so I think he has scarlet fever. She orders throat swabs for the both of us. Mine comes back positive for strep, and though strep and scarlet fever go hand in hand, I thank God to know my baby's test came back negative. I had no idea his ears were bothering him as well, because he hadn't been picking at them, but when they looked into them, they too were red. They administered some ear drops and very shortly thereafter he fell asleep.

We were both prescribed antibiotics, because strep can cause heart and kidney damage if left untreated. You can find information in this article on Answers.com. Stay healthy!

Black Heritage Toys

The offer for me to review these product couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. As many of you already know, i'm a homeschooler, and i'm still new to it, as my oldest is just 7. It can be a challenge trying to squeeze in so much knowledge. As African Americans, I want my children to have knowledge of those who've come and gone, and those who yet remain, who have made great names for themselves. That's why i'm glad to be able to let you know about Black Heritage Toys.

The first product that I would like to talk about is the puzzle that we received. The age recommendation is from ages 3 and up. I like that the puzzle pieces are perfect for my children's little hands. My 3 year old thoroughly enjoyed helping his big brother and sister put this puzzle together, and trying to put it together on his own. The colors are very vibrant, and once it's together, the conversation comes naturally. This particular puzzle was one of President Obama, our nation's first African American president.

The second product that we received to review is the Black Heritage Trivia Game. The recommended ages are 7 and up. This game is challenging, but there is much to be learned. I learned some new things myself, and am glad to be able to introduce these facts to my children at such young ages. This is knowledge that they can take with them throughout their lives.
